Not everyone who collects coins does so for their value in some kind of future post-apocalyptic setting. Just because coins happen to sometimes be a part of our field, which is precious metals, does not mean that all coins' purchase price is based on their intrinsic metal content. Most rare coins, if investment grade, are not priced with any consideration towards their their metal value (price will obviously be higher than the gold or silver or platinum in it...), but based on the buyers' prediction of a rise in value based on the scarcity of the coin.

Ironically, many who partake in rewarding hobby of numismatics are the wealthy Wall Street and Washington types who are full supporters of the inflationary fiat Fed, and are in fact purchasing their coins with money made off the lies of fake money!

For some people, historic value is important. An ancient Greek Drachma may only contain $2.50 worth of silver but it is a valuable piece of history. Coin collecting has been pretty popular since about the fourteenth century. The world has been through a lot since then, lots of crises, lots of SHTF.
